Space Coast Credit Union

Building Trust Before the Doors Open

SCCU partnered with &Barr to lead a strategic public relations effort designed to build awareness, establish credibility, and position the organization as Orlando’s Financial Watchdog through coordinated communications, media outreach, community partnerships, and launch events.
Public Relations Strategy

When Space Coast Credit Union expanded into Orlando, the challenge wasn’t simply announcing new branches. It was introducing a trusted financial institution to a market that didn’t yet know it. Although SCCU has served Floridians since 1951 and operates more than 60 branches statewide, Orlando presented a competitive landscape dominated by national banks and established regional institutions. While nearly 28,000 existing SCCU members already lived in Orange and Seminole counties through indirect lending relationships, most consumers had little familiarity with the credit union itself.

To support SCCU’s expansion, &Barr developed a public relations strategy designed to build awareness, establish credibility, and create meaningful community connections before the branches even opened. Anchored by the message “Orlando’s Financial Watchdog,” the program combined internal communications, executive communications, media relations, community relations, corporate social opportunity, and event planning and management to position SCCU as both a trusted financial advocate and a new neighbor invested in the region’s success.

Preparing Team Members and Leadership

Because the expansion marked SCCU’s first entry into a new market in years, internal communications played a key role in ensuring Team Members felt informed, excited, and ready to support the launch. &Barr developed a dedicated content series on SCCU’s internal intranet platform, ONEStop, providing regular updates on the Orlando expansion, construction progress, and upcoming launch milestones. These updates helped build anticipation across the organization while reinforcing the significance of the credit union’s growth. We also supplied Team Members with talking points for if they were asked about the expansion, they knew the messaging to provide, whether internal or external.

Executive communications ensured SCCU’s leadership could confidently introduce the credit union to the Orlando community. &Barr developed messaging and talking points for CEO Shane Hoyle and other senior leaders, preparing them to engage with media, community partners, and members throughout the launch period. Additional communications supported internal leadership touchpoints, including talking points for the SVP of Retail to share updates during the organization’s monthly State of the Union meetings.

Member communications also played a role in maintaining transparency and engagement with SCCU’s existing membership. Updates shared through the credit union’s monthly Watchdog Report newsletter kept members informed about the Orlando expansion and upcoming community events, reinforcing the organization’s continued growth and commitment to serving Floridians across the state.

Introducing SCCU to the Orlando Market

Media relations served as a primary PR driver of awareness during the expansion. &Barr developed a strategic series of announcements tied to key milestones throughout the launch. The first release introduced SCCU’s expansion into Orange County, followed by announcements surrounding the opening of the Waterford Lakes branch and its the grand opening celebration and the launch of the Avalon Park branch and its grand opening event.

Beyond traditional announcements, the media relations program focused on securing meaningful coverage that would introduce SCCU to new audiences and reinforce its reputation as a member-focused financial institution. &Barr coordinated interviews and media outreach that secured coverage across prominent outlets including Orlando Business Journal, Florida Today, Central Florida Lifestyles Magazine, CU Insight Credit Union Times and more. Additional event listings and community calendar placements across outlets such as the Orlando Sentinel, The Community Paper, and local broadcast stations helped promote the grand opening celebrations and drive community attendance.

In total, the media relations efforts generated 21 media placements and more than 8.1 million impressions, helping establish early visibility for SCCU across the Orlando market.

Demonstrating Commitment to the Community

As SCCU entered the Orlando market, community partnerships played a critical role in demonstrating the credit union’s commitment to the region beyond financial services. The expansion coincided with the launch of SCCU’s Corporate Social Opportunity program, Partners in Purpose, which focuses on initiatives that help communities through three core pillars: Protect, Prosper, and Preserve.

Through the program, SCCU partnered with two organizations that reflect those priorities: Junior Achievement of Central Florida and the American Red Cross of North and Central Florida. Each organization received a $25,000 donation, with check presentations integrated into the grand opening celebrations at the Avalon Park and Waterford Lakes branches. The partnerships also extended beyond financial support, as SCCU organized volunteer opportunities for Team Members with both organizations to further strengthen the relationships.

Additional community relations efforts helped introduce SCCU to local business leaders and residents. &Barr coordinated SCCU’s partnership with the East Orlando Chamber of Commerce, including participation in the organization’s annual Business Expo and collaboration on ribbon cutting ceremonies that formally welcomed the credit union into the community.

Opening the Doors

To celebrate the launch of the new Orlando branches, &Barr partnered with the SCCU Community Engagement Team to plan and execute grand opening events designed to bring together members, community partners, and local leaders. The events served as both a celebration and an opportunity for SCCU to formally introduce itself to the community and celebrate the new market and its residents.

The teams managed the full run of show for each event, including program development, executive remarks, community partnership integrations, and event logistics. Attendees included SCCU members, nonprofit partners, board members, executives, Team Members, and members of the public. Check presentations with Junior Achievement and the American Red Cross were incorporated into the programs, reinforcing SCCU’s commitment to community investment.

The events also created opportunities for leadership visibility, allowing SCCU executives to share the credit union’s mission and vision directly with attendees while welcoming the community into the new branches.

Building Momentum in a New Market

Together, these public relations efforts helped establish Space Coast Credit Union as a trusted and engaged community partner in Orlando from day one. By aligning internal communications, executive communications, member communications, media relations, community relations, Corporate Social Opportunity, and launch events, &Barr ensured SCCU entered the market with credibility, visibility, and a strong foundation for growth.

The result was a successful introduction that not only generated significant media reach but also created meaningful connections with community organizations, members, and local residents. Before long, Orlando didn’t just know the name Space Coast Credit Union, it knew its Financial Watchdog.
