Rain or Shine
How Resilience Powers Successful Advertising Campaigns
By: Taylor Stuart, Account Service Intern
Advertising doesn’t always happen in the office with storyboards and brainstorming sessions. Sometimes, it happens on the shoreline; umbrellas in hand, lenses pointed at the horizon, and clouds threatening to wash out the day.
During my internship at &Barr, I had the opportunity to join a shoot for our client, the Space Coast Office of Tourism, out at Cocoa Beach. The assignment was clear: capture the essence of Florida’s coast to bring in future travelers. What wasn’t so clear? The Florida weather forecast. (What’s new?)
What started as a sunny, high-energy sandy morning suddenly turned into a gray, rainy, and still sandy afternoon. Instead of packing up, we adapted. We shifted the schedule, found cover where we could, kept spirits high, and continued shooting.
That’s when it hit me… this is what advertising is all about.
Adapting to the unpredictable.
The forecast is never certain in agency life; things rarely go exactly as planned. Client priorities shift, the market changes, or a perfect creative idea can hit a sudden roadblock. In many ways, advertising is like a beach shoot trying to happen during the Florida summer. You can prep and plan, but you can’t stop the storm from coming.
The key? Resilience.
On Cocoa Beach, we didn’t stop when the rain came. We adjusted. We laughed. We problem solved. And we walked away with exactly what we needed (and then some). That same persistence and flexibility is what brands need to thrive in today’s noisy, competitive, ever-changing marketplace.
Great campaigns aren’t built under perfect conditions. They’re built by teams who know how to weather the storm. The shoot reminded me how powerful it is when the agency, clients, and crew work together with a shared goal and a mindset of adaptability.
That kind of resilience doesn’t just help you survive the unexpected. It helps you create in it. It turns limitations into fresh perspectives. It keeps the energy high when the clouds roll in. And in the end, it helps deliver a message that’s not only seen… but remembered.
Interning at &Barr has shown me that agency life is fast-paced, collaborative, and full of curveballs. But it’s also where I’ve seen the most passionate, creative, and committed people roll with the punches and still produce exceptional work, rain or shine.
So, whether you’re dodging rain at a beach shoot or adapting to a few unexpected curveballs, always remember the magic often happens in the mess. You just need the right people, a few umbrellas, and a lot of resilience.
